“To me, the garden is a doorway to other
worlds; one of them, of course, is the world of birds. The garden is their
dinner table, bursting with bugs and worms and succulent berries”.
Anne Raver
The history of Feathers of Knysna started way back in 1986 as a small
home-run business. Andre and Cathy Van Niekerk made their very first pair
of ducks in the dining room of their Knysna home. From humble beginnings,
the demand for the wooden carvings was to grow at a phenomenal rate.
The earliest birds were all branded with the shape of a metal nut, and
on them was written “the three nuts”, which referred to Andre,
Cathy and Andre’s mom Sue, who had also been drawn into the business.
With rapid expansion, the family and birds could no longer co-habit in
the same premises. Soon a more formal approach to manufacturing saw the
home industry establish itself in industrial premises, at the same time
adopting a name which has now become an internationally recognized brand,
namely Feathers of Knysna.
The Van Niekerk’s sold
the business to the current owner in 1993, and it now operates from substantial
factory premises in the Industrial Area of Knysna. Although the business
has grown exponentially over the passing of time, the original attention
to detail, along with the best of raw materials available, still makes
the original Feathers of Knysna products the most prestigigeous and desirable
in the marketplace.
Testimony to the fine quality of the products is made by the demand for
special commissioned designs for companies worldwide, as well as presentations
made locally to dignitaries visiting South Africa.
Feathers prides itself on still
having some of the original members of staff, dating back to the 80’s
within its ranks.
The majority of products are in limited editions, to which you will find
reference on the dedicated product pages. Feathers of Knysna ships world
wide.
